Cornerstones Community Partnerships works with communities throughout New Mexico to restore adobe buildings as a centerpiece of community revitalization. This summer, Zivile and fellow intern, Carmen Gonzalez made measured drawings of what is perhaps the oldest extant adobe structure in New Mexico—La Glorieta, now part of the Manzano Day School in Albuquerque. La Glorieta was built around 1662 by Don Diego de Trujillo (b. 1612 in Mexico City, came to New Mexico as a soldier in 1641).The building’s original size and shape are not known, because it was partly destroyed during the Pueblo Indian revolt in 1680. The family fled to El Paso and returned in the late 1690s to rebuild the hacienda. The south facing portion of structure dates to the late 17th century; the portal, or ramada, was constructed a century later; and the rest of building was added in stages from the late 1800’s to the early 1900’s. The house retains most of its important original architectural features, including the windows and doors.
