Philip Caston, professor at Neubrandenburg University of Applied Sciences in Germany, brought two of his students with him to participate in the National Park Service's HABS/HAER program documenting historic covered wooden bridges in Vermont (see Nadine Bauer and Arnold Kreisel).  Philip participated in the First National Covered Bridge Conference at the University of Vermont in Burlington and in the field, by prior arrangement with the NPS, used one covered bridge as a case study for demonstrating German documentation techniques.  In fact, Philip actually served as a supervisor for the HAER documentation team during a portion of the summer. The documentation team included interns from England, Italy, Romania, Poland, and Germany as well as HABS/HAER staff and team members from the United States.

"[The internship] enabled me to meet a variety of professional monument conservationists, to learn about conservation in the US, to record a covered bridge to the HAER standard for its inclusion in the Library of Congress, to demonstrate German building recording methods and of course to see many of the fine covered bridges up close and in detail. For this chance I wish to thank chief of HAER Eric DeLoney, his team in Washington and the US/ICOMOS for their support."
