Intern Report:

“It has been a wonderful experience and I am very thankful to have been given this opportunity of spending three months in such an amazing city as San Francisco, and to live and work at the Presidio, which has been just terrific.”

Working with Christina Wallace, Senior Preservation Specialist with the Presidio Trust, Javier’s primary duties involved the analysis of the interior finishes of the Mesa Room, part of the Officers’ Club, the oldest building in the Presidio and the city of San Francisco. The intent was to document and clarify the dates of installation of all the interior finishes in that room, starting with the oldest period (ca. 1810) up through the present day. The work included surveying the interior of the room, researching historic information, taking paint samples, and analyzing them with a microscope. His internship resulted in a report that included the description of the work, the methodology used, the conclusions, some maintenance recommendations, and drawings.

In addition, Javier assisted Sannie Osborne and her staff at the Presidio’s Archaeology Laboratory with studying the possibilities for a new location for the Laboratory (possibly the Officers’ Club). He also attended numerous meetings related to different ongoing projects within the Presidio, each in different stages of development, construction, or restoration. These include the Walt Disney Family Museum and Archives, rehabilitation of Funston Avenue Houses, the Foggy Bridge Winery, the rehabilitation of Queen Anne’s-style houses, and the restoration of the Arguello Gate Piers, among numerous others.
