Intern Report:

The Western Galilee College, the Development Company for Old Akko, the Akko Municipality, and The Israel Antiquities Authority recently created the International Center for Conservation at Old Akko, situated in Old Akko’s southern sector. The center's main goal is providing instruction in all preservation and conservation professions. In fact, a bachelor’s degree program, including both theoretical and practical aspects, has been developed—the first of its kind in Israel. The center also serves as a study center for local students and an international seminar center.

James’ internship involved making an historic assessment of the main building housing the new International Center for Conservation, a building in the Pisan Quarter of Old Akko (Acre) formerly known as the Lighthouse Youth Hostel. His final report and drawings represent the significant amount of work he was able to accomplish, despite the fact that many of the relevant primary source documents have been transferred to other countries.

Through the limited number of documents available and extensive physical evaluation of the building, he found evidence of several different building campaigns, beginning with the Crusader occupation and extending through the Ottoman period into modern times.
