"Certainly the best way to learn about heritage is to travel. Traveling is fun, but traveling leads to knowledge and experience if you stay long enough to learn about the society's way of life, approach towards the [historical] legacy, to meet bright personalities, and to make new friends. That remains in your mind and heart for a lifetime."
Donika Georgieva spent her internship assisting with the preparation of a draft World Heritage Nomination for Historic New Harmony, a 19th-century Utopian community in Indiana that represents "the perfect blend of tangible and intangible heritage." Donika recognized that this historic community managed to preserve strong community and artistic spirit, a culture that is an integral part of its society.
For her internship, Donika conducted research, compiled the main body of text for the nomination in accordance with UNESCO's requirements for World Heritage nominations, and organized cartographic and photographic documents to support the nomination. By the end of the summer, Donika had compiled the draft dossier and presented it to the Board of Trustees, staff, and community of Historic New Harmony. During the summer, Donika also had the opportunity to participate in the National Alliance of Preservation Commissions 2004 Forum, which was held in Indianapolis.
