The Latin School of Al-Houson was established during the Ottoman period. In Spring of 2006, Professor Rami Daher’s of Jordan University engaged his architecture students to conduct research on the preservation and conservation needs of the Latin School complex. The two US/ICOMOS interns were tasked with reviewing the work of the architecture students and crafting a preservation/ conservation plan for the Latin School complex with the goal of packaging various aspects of the plan into fundable projects.
Working with Fr. Imad Twal, Parish Priest Houson-Shatana, and Dr. Rami Daher of Jordan University, among others, Caroline and fellow intern, Marlise Fratinardo met with community members, preservation organizations, and representatives from government agencies throughout the course of their internship. Their final products included a brochure describing the proposed project—the Al Deir Community Center —as well as a detailed proposal, ready for submittal to granting agencies and other potential funders. The community center would celebrates and unifies the entire Al Houson community – past, present, and future – through formal and informal educational programs and events.
