"I feel very lucky to have had this internship because my experiences at the Centre gave me an entirely new view of cultural heritage and all that it entails."
Andree's internship consisted of numerous duties assisting ICOMOS archivist Jose Garcia Vicente. Her knowledge of German came in handy as she spent much of her time indexing the Journals of the Germany ICOMOS National Committee and entering them into the database. She also assisted with updating the Centre's website, posting links for conferences and symposia related to cultural heritage and conservation.
One of her most interesting projects was compiling dossiers for World Heritage Sites. Using UNESCO's website and other resources, she put together site profiles that included location, descriptions, justification for inscription, and a bibliography for each site, concentrating primarily on World Heritage Sites in Asia, the Pacific region, and in Arab states. Her background in Middle Eastern Archaeology made working on sites in the Arab states most interesting, and these dossiers, which are now available online, are the most downloaded items on the ICOMOS website.
One of the most rewarding aspects of her internship, however, was the opportunity to work in an international community, meeting people involved in preservation from across the world, and gaining a better understanding of how other countries view ideas about cultural heritage. During the last week of her internship, she was able to attend several sessions of an Extraordinary Session of the World Heritage Committee of UNESCO.
