Amal Sachedina's internship involved on-going documentation work of the historic buildings of Valletta, the capital of Malta and a World Heritage Site.  For the past several years, the Valletta Rehabilitation Project offered US/ICOMOS interns an opportunity to contribute to the preservation of this historic area and to learn about the archaeology and architecture of Malta.

Amal's survey work concentrated on St. Paul's Street, which runs the length of the grid-planned city.  This street contains an assortment of buildings ranging from the ornate facade of St. Paul's Church to dilapidated townhouses.  For the field survey portion of her internship, Amal recorded the architectural details and measured and mapped individual buildings.  Amal entered the information into the computer database.

The working day during the summer months is relatively short on Malta, extending from 9 am to 1 pm.  During the afternoons, Amal spent a great deal of time reading at the public library about the history of Malta and Maltese architecture.  She also had the opportunity to explore the many archaeological sites and scenic spots of this Mediterranean island.

"While thoroughly enjoying my experiences in Malta, I was also able to expand my architectural vocabulary and my attention to detail on building facades."
